I’m supporting St Peters Hospice by running the Bath half marathon with a team of people from work.

St Peter’s Hospice is Bristol’s only adult hospice caring for local people with incurable illnesses. Our commitment is to improve the quality of life of patients while extending care and support to their families and loved ones. Last year we cared for over 2,000 patients and supported over 6,000 family members, including children. 85% of this care was provided in patients homes.

All of our care is provided free of charge – the NHS contributes just 25% of our annual running costs. For the rest we are totally reliant on the generosity of the public who support us through many different ways.

Please go to http://www.virginmoneygiving.com/team/DASboot to see my fundraising page and sponsor me online. Many Thanks

Update: managed to beat my P.B by 3 mins, 1h48m15s, well chuffed and with the cake sale and offline donation we have raised +£1300. Thanks to great crowd support, Bath is defo one of my fav halfs.

Waiting at the start, don’t think I’ve ever seen so many people waiting in massive lines. Respect to Ant and Dec for hi-fiving 100′s of people as they started. The first 3-4 miles were great and going over the Tyne bridge was great however the rest of the route is on a ring road through housing estates. I guess the rainy weather dampened the crowds spirits? The last mile in south shields was super, loads of people and great atmos. Who knew there was a beach there?

I found it a pretty tough half with what felt like a gradual uphill all the time that made pacing difficult (well for me anyway). Worth the trip to Newcastle, even saw a blurry image of me whiz by on TV coverage and glad I’ve done it but the crowds were not a patch on the London Marathon. London I salute you again!

I’m sure we’ve spoken or maybe you saw my facebook status? I successfully completed the 2010 London Marathon in 4h33m on 25thApril. The race went to plan without hitting the wall, although I did end up running an extra 2.5 miles due to the masses and not be able to stay on the optimum red line. I was over whelmed by the support from family and friends but also the local spectators for their cheers, jelly babies and bananas. It was an amazing event and I feel privileged to of participated. Fully recommend it to anyone, it’s well worth the early starts, miles of training and fund raising.

Along the journey I learnt

Drinking milk within 20 mins of exercise improves muscle recovery times (it really works!)

You can’t self examine your prostate! Go to your doctor (for the record I didn’t find out the hard way the Prostate Cancer website is very informative)

Cake sales yield the most money vs effort (if you have a great team of bakers)

Essential agree where your supporters are going to be, there so many people at the Marathon!

Stairs are not your friend post marathon

The money you’ve donated will help fund research in to Prostate Cancer treatment, help those live with Prostate Cancer and raise awareness. Helpfully you’re all better aware? Collectivity we (yes you guys!) managed to raise over £2,400 for Prostate Cancer and I genuinely could not of reached and surpassed my target (or indeed completed the distance) without your support, so a heart felt thank you!

After last years good times at the commando challenge, this year I decided to step up and lead a rag tag bunch of renegade solders of fortune through the famous mud, tunnels and lakes (and back). Team fridge monkeys go go go! As you can see from the photo everyone regretted it instantly! but after we got covered head to toe in mud the regrets disappeared. It’s not often in adult life that you totally let go and mud wrestle and get completely covered head to toe in mud. Another thing that really works in the team element, in fact teams only so you get great camaraderie between teams to clean running towards the mud bath and muddied running staggering back.

I definitely recommend the 10k marine challenge over the standard marine challenge as you’ll be nice and hot when you get to the assault course and the muddy cold water is actually quite refreshing [at first].

Best of all it’s for a good cause! Team “fridge monkeys” managed to raise £280 for the Devonshire Air Ambulance and British Legion. Thanks to friends and family who donated and the team for the blood, sweat and tears. More photos here

If anyone reading this is thinking of doing it, I’d recommend it to all and fitness wise I’d say in my *expert opinion if you’re ok running a flat 10K you’ll be fine to run the marine commando challenge.

See you next year?

Hi all,

I made it! After early and wet start from Bristol on Sunday morning I made it all the way to Chobham Rugby club in just less than 8hrs (cycle time), totaling a distance of 113 miles. It was a great way to see the courtyside and I really enjoyed it and raised £350 in total! .

Best bits:

Seeing the chalk white horse on the side of a hill.

Making it to the top of box hill and the first refreadshmnet stop and the sun coming out.

Getting to the lunch stop and realising only 35 miles to go.

Getting lost and seeing a Action 100 STOP! sign telling me to go back – really handy having those signs, the organisers know there stuff!

Seeing ruth waiting to pick me up when the coach got me back to bristol.

Action 100 organized it very well, signs and arrows on every junction and rest stops every 15miles or so with tasty refreshments and the lunch was a better than expected salad buffet with plenty of pasta, rice etc to stock up on!.

I’d would highly recommend doing it! in fact I will be signing up for next year as soon as they open registration. Hopefully some of you guys will join me next year? let me know if you do.

Thanks again for the sponsorship!

Scotty
